The EU? This is an organisation that was set up specifically to erect grotesque trade barriers to protect European farmers from competition from poor countries, thereby entrenching poverty in half the world for generations. Stripped of their ability to sell anything to Europe, African countries in particular have descended into poverty, chaos and civil wars.

Tens of millions have died so that French and German farmers can live a lifestyle they simply don't earn.

Spot on, and it's a disgrace.

To be fair to Obama he did at least have the self-awareness to look baffled by the award.

Re: Malala wins Nobel Peace Prize
The saddest aspect of this story is that the Nobel Peace Prize has been so devalued as a currency that genuinely worthy winners (like Malala) ought to hand the award back so as not to be bracketed with the idiotic winners of recent years.

Let's not forget that the peace prize is the only Nobel award adjudicated by Norway - all the others are decided on by the Swedish Nobel panel, and by and large the Swedes have exhibited pretty good judgement over the years.

The Norwegian panel, despite having only one award to dish out every year, has so much egg on its face it could cook an omelette to feed thousands. They famously awarded the prize to Barack Obama before he had even become President, the first and only incidence of a prize being awarded for what a person might do in the future as opposed to any actual achievements.

Even that pales into comparison when set against the comically stupid decision to award the prize to the EU, which the batty Norwegians did in 2012.

None of that matters to the Norwegian Nobel Numpties. They also awarded the peace prize to the Atomic Energy Authority in 2005 for its efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes. Note that this has nothing to do with preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, which can only be enforced by the major powers; instead it involves an an arcane argument that a submarine running on diesel is somehow more 'peaceful' than one running on a nuclear reactor.

One day the world will wake up to the fact that Norway is not the plucky little Viking country with the fjords but a truly nutty little state that is an appalling neighbour to everyone around it. My advice to Malala is: hand back the award and tell the Norwegians to find someone else to embarrass with this hopelessly tarnished trinket.

Well deserved!
She was blogging against the Taliban hence she got shot, now she's written a book and stands against everything they preach!
She's raised hope for millions of oppressed women.
Not bad for a teenager.
I'd rather have the likes of her in this country than most of the pikey English fat benefit wankers!

Re: Malala wins Nobel Peace Prize
Coffee, I think that's a bit unfair. It's not that she targeted the Taliban because they shot her, rather that they shot her because she had already targeted them. As a young girl she spoke up for women's education, a phenomenally brave thing to do in the Taliban's back yard, and she did so because women's right to an education were under direct threat from the Taliban. That's why she was shot. If she'd just towed their party line, they'd never have touched her.

I've nothing against her but I think she's been used as a poster girl to demonise the Taliban

Isn't it ruddy frustrating when people demonise the Taliban? Such lovely fair minded chaps. Anyone who's been to one of their 'slaughter an infidel and tombola' events at the local football stadium will know they just like a bit of light hearted fun.

The mentioning of her pert little intrusions are well overdue by WHO standards. I know that Ronaldo and coffers thrive on regular sessions of sweet mammorial sustanzas

Was it the Taliban that shot her? I have no way of knowing, but I tend to be highly sceptical when something gets this level of promotion.

However, while I don't see a Peace Prize as being appropriate here, she is FAR more deserving than previous recipients such as Barack Obama (who had done nothing to merit it, but has since proven to be a war junkie), and (would you believe) Henry Kissinger.

They really do have a bit of a warped sense of humour at Nobel HQ, methinks.

Re: Malala wins Nobel Peace Prize
Ron, I've been surprised by the support for her as a deserving laureate on this thread. Pleasantly, too, as you wouldn't automatically think that support for this kind of thing is necessarily a classic WHO trait.

I've got absolutely nothing against her, but it seems to me that what she has done has been a direct reaction in response to what happened to her, rather than an extended effort based on personal commitment to a cause or whatever. There's no doubt that she has done a lot of good. I'm also sure that the Nobel committee's choice is at least in part a response to prevailing ill-will towards Muslims in some parts of the world.

But what is perhaps most surprising is that there is no one in this vast world of ours who has worked for peace over years or decades and who may be more deserving of the award than her.
